I could NOT. STOP. LAUGHING. And thinking. I seriously started a tally sheet of all the times I actually laughed out loud, and I quit after thirty times in less than twenty pages. Yes. It is that funny. The sentences are quippy and quotable, and the characters are laugh-out-loud hilarious, but that's all just trappings to a truly thought-provoking and challenging satire on the books we hate, the books we love, and the books we hate to love.
The book begins as Broodie McHottiepants is dumped by an Author, so he comes to the conclusion he should probably write his own book on what he knows best- how to be himself. Hilarity ensues as he attempts to convey just what makes him so special. From time to time, his hot, confident, ALWAYS evil ex-girlfriend, Blondie DeMeani steals his notebook, offering her own opinion. I won't spoil the ending, but let's just say that there were actual tears in my eyes. Yes- this book hit the holy grail of books and made me laugh AND cry in the same chapter.
This book is surprising and sweet, but most of all, funny. Expectedly funny. Unexpectedly funny. Clever, silly, and spot-on satire. It includes, but is not limited to: a recipe, a "which main character are you?" quiz, a visit to the land of deleted characters, a chart to tell your horoscope's literary device, and much, much more.
One of my favorite parts is when it describes active voice, passive voice, and "passive-aggressive voice," which just about make me cry it was so hilarious.
Read this book. If you've ever seen a popular movie, or watched a popular TV show, or read a popular book, you will find this book hysterically observant and spot-on. If you want to learn to write or simply like to read, you will love the insight this book gives you.
As Broody himself says, "By reading this fantastic, brilliant book about me and my life, why, I'm sure you'll improve your own, at least a smidgeon."
I know I did!

Brooding YA Hero Becoming a Main Character Almost as Awesome as Me eBook Carrie DiRisio Broody McHottiepants Linnea Gear Reviews
BROODING YA HERO BECOMING A MAIN CHARACTER (ALMOST) AS AWESOME AS ME reads like part satirical writing guide and part YA narrative. The combination of the two elements is funny, entertaining, and an absolute delight to read.
This book is the perfect read for writers and book bloggers. Broody brilliantly points out some major tropes and plot devices in YA fiction, and while the tone is light and satirical, it also sheds some light on the things that are done frequently in YA fiction, the things that are done really well, and the things that need to be done better.
I really enjoyed the narrative of Broody and his Evil Ex-girlfriend. In fact, I found the two of them so entertaining, my one criticism of this book would be that I would have loved more of them!
Beneath the humor and the wonderfully silly storyline, Carrie Ann DiRisio has included some really important social commentary that everyone, not just those of us in the book community, need to be more aware of.
To add an extra layer of fun to this book, there are quizzes, diagrams, and illustrations that readers are sure to enjoy.
I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read and review this book. It definitely gave me some critical insight into the books that I'm reading every day and I can't wait to see more from author Carrie Ann DiRisio!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
As this book is all about teaching you how to unlock your main character potential,
it stands to reason that anyone who reads it can become one.
Brooding YA Hero Becoming a Main Character (Almost) as Awesome as Me isn’t your typical novel. It is a handbook, a guide so to speak, it’s really a book about books! But it is hilarious, witty, super creative and ultimately very feminist. There are quizzes, puzzles, horoscopes, and clearly amazing illustrations. I literally shed tears, I was laughing so hard! I think that every fan of young adult literature should read this book, even though it pokes fun at the most tropiest of things, it’s also just all-around enjoyable.
Brooding YA Hero is full of sass, hilarity, and social commentary about the world of YA. If we can’t laugh at ourselves or the things we love, then aren’t we all just self-satisfied and boring? Maybe that was just me and my take. But seriously, this book should be on every single young adult writers’ shelves, as well as every lover and reader of YA. I never saw myself as an aspiring writer, but with all the book events I go to, so many people ask those types of questions about advice for an aspiring writer, and I think from now on, everyone should just buy this book!
The topics covered within these pages may be full of snark, but they also shine light on important issues and is truly a guide of how to write a good brooding hero, and what not to do … like kill off the only queer character, or be the white savior of the POC character. It doesn’t tell you stop reading the tropiest YA, but it opens your eyes so a reader can know what tropes are out there. There are some not so subtle riffs on some very popular books, and I loved the side-eye shade and I just dutifully read, sipped my tea, and laughed out loud!
If you love cliches or not there is something in this book for every reader. I think if you read Brooding YA Hero, it will not only help if you want to be a writer, but ultimately I think it will make you a better reader too!
