Wow.  For those of you who have never read a Teresa Mummert book, I highly recommend Rellik. This is definitely NOT your average love story. This is a story about two dysfunctional people and their imperfectly perfect love.  Ryder "Rellik" Bentley and Mikaella "Ella" Lighten were the epitome of two jacked up souls. But as fate would have it, those two souls found each other after enduring loss,  disappointment, and abuse...and made something tragically sweet together. Rellik is the perfect anti-hero. You don't want to like him because of his seemingly callous manner but you just can't help yourself.  He is a good guy in the most heinous of ways. He has killed and makes no apologies for his actions. I actually cheered for each person he rendered his own brand of justice upon.  *Gasp*...I know.  Cheering for a killer. How dare I, right?!?!  But don't judge me too quickly. Just read the story and you'll definitely understand. His actions were justified in the most dysfunctional way.  That is what you need to keep in mind when reading Rellik. The characters in this story do not operate the way you THINK they should but boy do they capture your attention and heart. And let's not forget Ms. Ella. She was just as screwed up as Rellik. Life had really dealt her some craptastic blows but she kept on moving until she was able to see justice served to those who should have protected her but hurt her or allowed her to be hurt. She was let down by everyone and everything except Rellik. Her dark knight.

I absolutely loved the twists and turns that Mummert took in the story.  It was intriguing and raw and captures your attention from the very beginning.  Her stories always infuse a bit of "ugly" in them but the end of the story always yields a beautiful mess. The characters are not perfect at the end,  as was the case in Rellik, but they are perfect for one another.

I hope that we will see stories about Trigger, Hangman, and Phantom soon. They were also imperfect.  Very much so.  But they were perfect friends for Rellik and they had his back when it counted. I want to know more about them and what makes them tick.  Write faster Teresa. Write faster! :)

If you enjoy romance with a bite,  I highly recommend Rellik.

Rellik edition by Teresa Mummert Romance eBooks Reviews

“real monsters thrived in chaos, ruled by pain.”

I love dark and twisted characters. These two did not disappoint. They were both fueled by anger and fear and felt completely alone in the world. I identified with both Rellik and Ella. I understood why Rellik was so tortured and also his need to help Ella. I think that when tragedy strikes, we all tend to blame ourselves to some degree. Ella was a fighter. I loved that about her. She lived a constant need to hide her tracks and watch her back, but she was fighting for more. Rellik's bandmates were great. The author did an awesome job of bringing them each one to life. Their bond was unique to any book I have read before and I think that the following books are going to be fantastic. With their friendship forming the way it did, (sorry, can’t give you any spoilers,) they are closer than blood.

The alternating POV was almost necessary since Rellik and Ella both had murky and distorted views of the world. I needed to spend time in each of their heads in order to make sense of their actions. The book centered on Rellik and Ella but definitely set up the storylines for the rest of the band. We were offered plenty of background on the guys and hints of their stories to come. I am excited for this series to continue.

His fingertips ran lightly over the small, thin scars that marred my lower belly and thighs. “Who hurt you?”
“Who hurt you?” I asked as his gaze lingered on me for a few seconds. He pressed his lips gently against one of the marks.
“That’s a long list.”

The plot was exciting and different. Teresa Mummert usually covers taboo and different effortlessly, so I wasn't concerned about that. She always delivers. I think that the fun of her books is actually lifting society up and viewing the underbelly for what it is. Normally I do not approve of insta-love, but I always take the psyche of the player into consideration and in this case, I think it made perfect sense. They had an intense connection and plenty of dysfunction to make them fall hard. It wasn't pretty, but I understood how it happened.

The ending was perfect. Sick, wrong and perfect. There was a HEAish and some very serious loose ends tied up tight. I never expected the twist near the end, but it answered any lingering questions I had. The story was excited clear through the epilogue. It was great that I found myself continually surprised throughout the story. Also, I really enjoyed the epilogue and the justice that was dished out. It was all so fitting.

My favorite part (sorry, it’s a spoiler, so this will be vague,) of the book is that "Ah-ha" moment when we receive our first twist that brings the story into an entirely different level of darkness. That moment stopped me in my tracks. When you realize that this is so much deeper and more dangerous than you initially thought. Loved it! All the secrets and emotions that were revealed kept me reading and begging for more. The other thing is that the characters all stayed true to who they were. Nobody suddenly changed or had some great epiphany. Their actions were consistent throughout.

"You knew I’d come after you.”

“I hoped.”

“Be careful what you wish for.”

My only complaint is that I wish it had been a bit longer. I loved the story and I would have liked to have had a few parts drawn out a little more. Otherwise, this was an excellent read. It had all my favorite things, mystery, suspense, romance with just the right twist of evil! ;)

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes dark and twisted romance. It is unconventional to say the least, but that is what made it great. It was well worth the wait for Rellik. I am really hoping we get a series out of this one. If you liked Pretty Little Things or the Honor Series, you will love this one.

Rellik was definitely worth the price and more. I read it as quickly as possible and hated when I had to put it down. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a dark romance full of unlikely and dysfunctional heroes.
