Brennus was an Ankou which acted like a Grim Reaper who led the souls of the dead to where they belonged. He had traded his mortality to the woman he thought he loved. Until he learned the truth about her. And both had become Ankou for the next thousand of years.Avery was a mortal girl who occasionally went to a dance club with her friends, to appease her ailing aunt Caroline. Her own parents died when she was twelve and it was her aunt who took care of her throughout the years, until they discovered that Caroline had cancer. She met Brennus in a club and was shocked to learn about his real identity. Have you ever heard about a Grim Reaper falling in love with a human? You are about to find out.
I thought this was an okay read. The premise sounded like a catch, a mortal girl fell in love with an Ankou, an immortal that guided the dead to their rightful place.
But as I perused the book, I had a hard time keeping myself interested with the story. It jas lost its glamour as the pages went. In the end, I thought the other characters did not need to exist in the book. Avery and Brennus and the third party in the triangle - Annonna basically ran the whole story and the others weren't really needed at all, in my opinion.
This isn't my first Samantha Young book, so I am kinda surprised that Drip Drop Teardrop didn't live up to my expectations.. This could have been better.

I picked this one up years ago but never seemed to find the time to get around to it. Which is funny because I'm a huge fan of Samantha Young’s books. Avery life has been tough losing her parents at 10 and being raised by her aunt. Now in college instead of having to worry about what dress to wear Avery is once again facing a loss . Her aunt who put her life on hold to raise Avery is now dying of cancer. Once a month she goes out to dance with her friends in the past she’s seen him but not really seen the stranger with the scar. This time she does dance with him, unknowingly she’s changed her life forever.
The stranger appears at her apartment later that night and tells her he’s a reaper and has been watching her. He’s determined that spending a week with him will cause her to fall in love with him. If Avery does fall in fact fall in love with Brennus by the end of the week she will take her aunts place and her aunt will have the chance to live her healthy life. However it can’t be that simple she has to really love him, and his ex still has her sights set on making Brennus hers.
I really enjoyed the characters I was able to connect with Avery which is a must even in a short novel. I liked Brennus he made mistakes and learned from them, and accepted his new life. Neither one was looking for love but what they found was what they needed. I think the concept for the Ankou (reaper) is really interesting, and the idea that people move on based on what they believe is very clever. I felt the author has did a great job creating a captivating story, for me it was hard to put down and I finished it in just a few short hours. My only complaint it just wasn't long enough I want more, otherwise I enjoyed it.
It is hard to get into a stand alone novella sometimes. Mostly it's because they are so short that it's hard to really get much character development. When people use these in series it works because you can do a little development in each novella but this is a stand alone. I haven't read anything by Samantha Young before, but she has a lot out there and they all have great covers. I think that she is a pretty good writer and the characters in this story have some intrigue. Avery is still traumatized by the death of her parents, and her near death, and now her aunt who cared for her after her parents passed is now dying too. Avery dislikes being the center of attention probably because of all the guilt she has, and then she meats Brennus a man with a horrid scar on his face that she is both repulsed by and drawn to who happens to be Death (sort of) too. He doesn't kill people just plays the role of Grim Reaper and ushers people on to their afterlife. All of the characters besides the 2 main ones are irrelevant, and even the main ones are sort of detached from us. They are supposed to be fated and they had met before, though how they met (though told) isn't really explained and I would have liked to hear how Avery got away. However, it is a quick read and those who like the young adult paranormal/fantasy romance will probably enjoy this too.
Book Review- Drip Drop Teardrop by Samantha Young
Avery lost her parents in an accident when she was ten. Her aunt Caroline took her in and raised her. Now Caroline is fighting for her life as cancer takes over her body. Avery can’t lose the only person she has left.
Caroline refuses to let Avery feel guilt and put her life on hold any more than she already has. So the monthly night out with friends is a must for Avery. She goes out dancing and forgets all her problems.
Lately there has been a strange man with a scarred face that watches her closely. He creeps Avery and her friends out. Things start to change when she dances with him one night. Then she notices him outside the club when a man is stabbed. She realizes who he is.
Her fear spikes when he shows up in her living room. He is there to make her a deal. Little does she know what she is getting involved with when she agrees to give him a week.
The storyline of this book was interesting. The author created a unique spin on death. Brennus was a fascinating character. I like the past that the author created for him. I kept thinking as I read this that I wish it was a longer story. I would have liked to delve into his character more and really learn what he has been doing for the last few centuries. He was arrogant and vulnerable, definitely a complex character.
Avery, on the other hand, annoyed me. She was a spoiled child that grew into an adult that refused to think for herself. She was a bit self-absorbed which sounds contradicting, but she would tend to focus on how things affected her. She tried to live her aunt Caroline’s life. It drove me crazy. Then she lied to Brennus. She would turn into a childish brat that lived in an adult woman’s body. Ugh get over yourself was usually my response. I give this book a 3 out of 5.
